SUSTAINABILITY

BPG is proud of signing the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment

Bell Packaging Group (BPG) takes a leading role in designing the future of plastic by signing the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, joining with many Global Stakeholders to Reduce Plastic Waste and Pollution in the World

We at BPG believe that both aluminum and plastic are ideal packaging materials for most consumer products. We are proud to have contributed in making those first necessity products including some lifesaving ones, more affordable, and accessible in a safer and more hygienic way thus contributing to improving the living standards of millions of people.

Having said that we realize that, in order to bequeath future generations a cleaner and more sustainable world, this is the time for all stakeholders to join forces and address the issue of post-consumer scrap. Even though the necessary technology may still be in development and the economics debatable, we are convinced that there is no valid reason for plastic packaging material to be discarded in nature and in particular, in the seas.

The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment unites businesses, governments, and other organisations behind a common vision and targets to address plastic waste and pollution at its source. It is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with UN Environment.

Launched in October 2018, the Global Commitment already unites more than 350 organisations on its common vision of a circular economy for plastics, keeping plastics in the economy and out of the ocean.

Signatories include more than 150 businesses that are part of the plastic packaging value chain, jointly representing over 20% of all plastic packaging used globally, including many of the world’s leading consumer packaged goods companies, retailers, and plastic packaging producers.

At the heart of the Global Commitment is a vision of a New Plastics Economy, where plastics never become waste. Each signatory formally endorses the vision and the need to work towards achieving it.

It is defined by six key points:

• Elimination of problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging through redesign, innovation, and new delivery models is a priority
• Reuse models are applied where relevant, reducing the need for single-use packaging
• All plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable
• All plastic packaging is reused, recycled, or composted in practice
• The use of plastics is fully decoupled from the consumption of finite resources
• All plastic packaging is free of hazardous chemicals, and the health, safety, and rights of all people involved are respected

Our specific commitments along wıth our co-signatories can be found in the Global Commitment Spring 2019 Report at www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org

Ever since it was founded, BPG adopted sustainable production techniques for the benefit of its customers and society. Empowered by this heritage and with a clear vision to continue to reduce our environmental impact and contribute positively to the country’s economy we aim to create facilities with a “Zero Environmental Footprint” by 2025 concerning our plastic and metal production processes.

By signing the commitment at this early stage allows us to collaborate with leading large corporations. We believe that we have taken a crucial step towards addressing and eliminating the bottlenecks that stand in the way of efficient recycling processes in Turkey and across the globe.

We encourage you as a Stakeholder in the plastic value chain, to join forces with us in becoming a signatory to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment. We need your contribution to the collaborative effort required to solve the technological and economic challenges we are facing, so as to realize our shared vision of a world where plastics never become waste.

In 2020, as Bell Packaging Group companies, we decided to create our Corporate Sustainability roadmap and publish our performance with Group Sustainability reports. As BPG, we determined our current situation in our first report and aimed to share our created sustainability management approach, material topics, and "Steps to the Future" strategy with our stakeholders. We aim to have zero environmental impact that occurs at all stages of our production and business processes in the fight against Climate Change, among the top priorities of our value creation cycle and evaluate circular economy practices from a multidimensional perspective.

In 2020, we achieved reductions in our raw material and waste density with the projects we carried out throughout the group. We prevented the use of 100 tons of plastic with our light-weighting efforts and contributed to the recycling of 105 tons of plastic with our 100% recyclable caps production. We reduced our carbon emission intensity by 10% compared to 2018, across our plastic group companies. We include our contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, for more details you could read our report below.
